Pregnancy is beautiful. Or it is? The reality is that for many women around the world, and even here in the United States, pregnancy can be a death sentence.

About 800 women worldwide die every day from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. About 99 percent of the deaths occur in the developing world. A woman’s lifetime risk of dying during or after pregnancy is 1 in 3,800 in the United States, but 1 in 39 in Sub-Saharan Africa.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, Dr. Richard Besser, chief health and medical correspondent for ABC News, hosted a Tweet Chat this week on maternal health. His goal was to shed light on this important global issue, and to honor the invaluable role that women play in communities around the world.

The heart of the matter is that it is the heart that matters. To have optimal cardiovascular health, your emotional and spiritual heart is just as important as your physical heart, and care must be given to all aspects of this vital organ.

Every thought and every emotion causes aninstantaneous cascade of hundreds, if not thousands, of neuropeptides and hormones that orchestrate a symphony of positive and negative effects within the body. That is why it is so important to pay close attention to the thoughts and emotions that are running through your mind, as they dictate the symphony of neurotransmitters playing in your body. As an example, would you rather be listening to the soothing sounds of classical music or the heart-pounding, adrenaline-charging sounds of heavy metal?

Everybody feels stress and knows it intimately, but very few of us think about what stress actually is.

Stress is a thought. That's it. No more, no less. If that's true, then we have complete control over stress, because it's not something that happens to usbut something that happens in us.

The dictionary definition of stress is, "bodily or mental tension resulting from factors that tend to alter an existent equilibrium." It is your thoughts out of balance.

The fatty, salty, creamy, savory taste and texture of nuts make them a popular snack, accompaniment with beer and ingredient in a host of dishes. But given their high calorie and fat contents, many people still shy away from eating nuts regularly.

Now, a new report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that adults who incorporate nuts into their diets don't have to limit their consumption. A review of 31 studies about eating nuts found that people who added nuts to their diets and who replaced other foods with nuts lost more weight (an average 1.4 pounds more) and reduced their waist sizes by more than half an inch.

Dieters are a funny breed, and by many criteria could be classified as insane. Gleefully participate in self-inflicted suffering? Check. Restrict entire categories of edible, nutritious, and tasty food? Check. Do the same thing over and over again and expect different results? Check. Throw in a couple of face tattoos and straitjackets, and we'll be ready for the asylum.

Amazingly, there are very few of us who do not belong to the dieter tribe. Dieting, and specifically chronic dieting (bouncing back and forth between various diets, food philosophies, and, ahem, body sizes), is a popular hobby in the 21st century. A combination of supersizing and unrealistic beauty standards has forced most of us to question the way we eat and look, and the dieting industry has been more than happy to offer us thousands of weight-loss solutions every year. Bless their hearts.

Increasing your heart rate several times a week will give you more get-up-and-go.
