The gym can be a super intimidating place. Walking into a gym for the first time with the desire to get in shape feels like walking into your first day at a new school. There is a sense of uncertainty and intimidation in the air, masked by the smell of sweat and metal. Not to mention everyone seems to know what they are doing. If you are a newbie to the gym, relax! Everyone has to start somewhere, right? Check out these tips for going from a gym newbie to a gym expert!

1. Sign-Up for Personal Training

Learn from the experts! This is one of the best ways to learn ins and outs of the gym. Have them show you around and teach you how to use the equipment.

2. Read Up

If you can’t afford personal training sessions on top of a gym membership (which can add up!), start doing some research. The internet has a plethora of resources. Some of the best sites are bodybuilding.com and xrx.net.

3. Take it Slow

Don’t try to do too much too fast. You’ve gotta walk before you can run, right? Start off by trying out body weight exercises, the treadmill, or the elliptical. Then you can progress to using more advanced equipment such free weights.

4. Take a Class

Not only are fitness classes fun and challenging, but they also are super motivating! Working out with others helps keep you accountable and can make you work out harder! Try Zumba, spin, or bootcamp!

5. Make a Friend (or bring one!)

Chances are, there is going to be someone in the same boat as you. Have a friend who wants to get in shape too? Have them tag along! Friends and fitness – the perfect combo!
