How to Approach Dating in College

If the rumors are true, dating in college can prove itself to be difficult. Simultaneously, it can be very exciting and rewarding. Navigating romantic relationships in college coincides with a time of self-discovery, personal growth, and heightened independence. However, college also presents new opportunities for those in relationships to increase their emotional intelligence and develop essential communication skills. Whether you’re looking for a long-term commitment, or exploring romance for the first, the key is to develop healthy, respectful relationships. 

Understanding the College Dating Scene 

College is unique because this is the first time many individuals have felt true independence. Therefore, the dating scene heavily revolves around this. However there are a few important pieces of advice to consider when stepping into the college dating scene. 

  1. There are different types of romantic relationships (Dating, committed relationships, casual relationships, sex relationships) 
  2. College presents unique opportunities for meeting people. 
  3. Dating apps play a large role in the college dating scene in 2024. 

Exploring Healthy Relationships 

The number one most important thing about relationships is that they are healthy and safe. Because dating in college is new for many people, it is important to cover the ground rules about a healthy relationship. A healthy relationship at its core is centered around: 

    • Empathy and kindness
    • Reliability and commitment 
    • Mutual trust and respect
    • Communication
    • Forgiveness
