July 14, 2022 //  by Kate Howland

All over TikTok and other social media platforms, weightlifting has become popular. Not only are experienced weightlifters participating in this trend by sharing their workouts, advice, and their journey, but beginners as well! Here’s a short guide to the beginners out there:

Start with bodyweight first

Beginning your weightlifting journey with body weight exercises is a great way to become familiar with main movement patterns in strength training. For example, before trying out the squat rack first become comfortable with the movement of a bodyweight squat. Become comfortable with how to squat before moving on to heavier weight.

Form over EVERYTHING

It might seem like an exaggeration but getting the motions along with the form down is vital when beginning your weightlifting journey. Injuries will be prevented, and efficient muscle gains will always occur with proper form. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! If a personal trainer is not available, try watching online tutorials.

Prep muscles with warmups / Care with Cool Downs

Try to make this a part of every workout session. Warmups are important to prevent injury and prepare your muscles for the workout ahead. Dynamic warmups, moving through gentle movement patterns, help your muscles prepare for the movement you’re about to do. It also helps with the increasing range of motion in your exercises providing full extensions or deeper squats.  This will ensure muscle growth and better results. Care for your muscles by cooling down with easy movement and making sure to stretch after lifting!
