As we celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day, it is a great time to recognize the importance of creating spaces where women feel comfortable being active, trying something new, and working toward their own health and fitness goals.
Walking into a gym as a woman can feel intimidating. You may feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar equipment and surrounded by people you’ve never seen before who seem confident and know exactly what they’re doing. But you have to remember, everyone was a beginner at one point. Confidence grows as you continue to show up for yourself and as you stay consistent in your routine. You will learn, grow and become more comfortable in your own strength. Every step you take toward growth is a step toward becoming stronger, both physically and mentally.
She Belongs in Fitness
Women taking on fitness began in the early 1970s and 1980s with changes continuing through the 1990s. The first waves of participation in these years helped make women who wanted to build muscle more accepted. Women engaging in strength training and other fitness activities have become a growing familiar presence in the fitness community. Training is not limited to one gender. Women deserve to feel confident and comfortable pursuing their fitness goals. The idea of muscular bodies has deeply developed from a physical culture that was primarily focused on men and bodybuilding. But today, the health and wellness world continues to evolve, generating more inclusive spaces where everyone can feel comfortable pursuing their fitness goals and finding their place in the community.
Taking up Space
Your place is not known by your own level of experience, the way you look, the quality of your reps, or how much weight you can lift. No matter if you are stepping into the gym or a workout studio for the first time ever, remember you are only working towards a personal goal. Allow yourself to take up space to learn, grow, and feel confident in the journey.
Your Workout, Your Way
Whether you are lifting weights, attending group fitness classes, or trying a new workout program, there is a place for you in the fitness community. Today’s fitness culture includes many different ways of participating and being active. You can lift in a gym, take a Pilates class, practice yoga, go on a walk or run, or try a Zumba class, anything to get your body up and moving. As the fitness culture grows, more women-owned gyms and fitness studios are being established to create a safe environment. Find something that you enjoy, find something that makes you feel good, and make it your own.
Building Confidence
Take a moment to celebrate your own progress. You are trying something new, you are becoming comfortable, be proud that you showed up for yourself! Start small and remember you don’t have to know everything on your first day. Messing up is a part of the learning process and every mistake gives you the opportunity to learn and become confident. Nobody starts their fitness journey knowing exactly what they’re doing. You are capable of way more than you think, so give yourself the space to grow and become stronger in your own way. Remember, your journey is yours, and you belong.
