One of my favorite pastimes is trying new and different foods. Bonus points if it’s really yummy! 2X the bonus points if it’s healthy. Trying new foods is fun because you’re just one bite away from finding your new favorite food. This concept was the inspiration for my new series: Food Finds Friday!
Each week I will introduce a new food that I’ve tried and discuss its possible health benefits. I’ll even give you some fun recipe ideas!
In This Week’s Spotlight…
Goji Berries!
Health Benefits of Goji Berries
Goji berries have historical roots in ancient China and are sometimes called wolfberries. They are high in vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, and iron. They also, to my surprise, contain all 8 essential amino acids! WHAT? One serving of goji berries contains 10% of your daily protein value. This is a plus if you’re vegan or vegetarian. Each 1/4 cup has just about 100 calories. Another fun fact – goji berries are considered a “superfood”. The contain more antioxidants than black raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries.
What Do Goji Berries Taste Like?
So they’re just a tad tart/sour and a little bit sweet.
Where to Buy Goji Berries
You can always consult our old friend Amazon. Or just peek in the natural foods section of your grocery store. Warning: you probably won’t find them in the produce area. They are dried and are put into plastic containers.
How to Use Goji Berries
Throw them into your yogurt and then top it with honey to cut down on a bit of the bitterness. You could also toss them into smoothies for an antioxidant boost! Drizzle them with dark chocolate if you really want to up the ante on the antioxidants.
