How To Get A First Date: Men Edition

people, technology and lifestyle concept - happy couple with bicycles taking picture by selfie stick and smartphone at summer park

June 26, 2025 //  by Emily Hayburn

Having trouble landing a first date, or just curious about how to land one from a woman’s perspective? Well, you’re reading the perfect article because I’m as honest (and maybe brutal) as it gets. Just kidding! But you are here looking for advice, and I’m here to help. Getting a first date can be intimidating, but trust me, guys, it’s not as hard as you make it out to be. There are key steps to take, and luckily, I’ve got them all here for you.

Step 1: Confidence

Confidence is the secret sauce. You don’t have to be overly cocky, but walking in like you own the place—while being respectful—is the way to go. Women notice when you feel comfortable in your own skin, and that confidence makes you more attractive.

Step 2: Appearance

Now, boys, showing up in sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt to a nice dinner? Not gonna land you a second chance. You don’t need to look like a model, but being clean, well-groomed, and dressed for the occasion is key. A little effort goes a long way—putting thought into how you present yourself shows you care about making a good impression.

Step 3: Conversational Skills

Nothing is worse than when I’m asking all the questions and the other person won’t ask me anything back. No one wants to sit in silence or feel like they’re carrying the conversation. Ask questions, listen actively, and share stories. It’s about creating a two-way street where both people feel heard and engaged.

Step 4: READ HER!

Listen, every woman is different, and it’s crucial to pay attention to her body language and verbal cues. If she’s into you, she’ll show it—if not, you’ll know, trust me, so don’t push it. Respect and understanding go a long way.

Step 5: First Impressions Matter

This is your one shot to get it right! Be on time, be polite, and give her a warm greeting. A great first impression sets the tone for everything else.

Step 6: Master the Art of Flirting

Flirting is all about subtlety. A playful comment, a light touch, or an occasional compliment works wonders. So keep it light, fun, and avoid crossing any lines too early.

Step 7: Know When to Ask

Timing is everything. Don’t rush into asking her out on the first conversation. Let things develop naturally, and when it feels right, ask. Women appreciate when you take the time to build rapport before diving in.

Step 8: Simple and Fun!

A lot of men don’t understand that we don’t need all these fancy dinners and extravagant dates. The best dates are often the simplest. Choose something that doesn’t feel forced or overly complicated—think coffee, a walk in the park, or grabbing a bite at a cool restaurant. Keep it relaxed and fun! Just make sure to communicate with her on whether she’s looking for something more casual or where she has to throw on that pair of heels.

At the end of the day, we’re all human. Women are not as scary as we seem. We get just as nervous, so make sure to set the vibe right. If we’re feeling comfortable around you, that means the date is headed in the right direction! By following these 8 steps, I’m confident you’ll be on your way to that second date!
