Spice It Up For National Walking Day!

Happy National Walking Day! I am typically pretty oblivious to the random “holidays” that are sprinkled almost daily throughout the calendar year, but a full day to celebrate walking?? I can’t say not to that. We talk a lot on here about all of the benefits that daily walks can have for your health (click here if you need a refresher!) so I won’t get into it – suffice it to say: walking = WONDERFUL for you. But if you walk every day, you may find yourself falling into walking habits – same route, same music, same scenery, etc. So, why not spice it up a little to celebrate the joy of walking!

Find a new playlist.

  • Are you typically a podcast listener while you walk? Try finding some upbeat tunes to put a new pep in your step or try a different genre of music to see how it impacts your walk!

Try a new route.

  • If you always turn right on your daily walk, just for today turn left – see where a new path takes you. It’s ok to get a little lost sometimes – it can lead to new discoveries (and maybe even a new favorite route!)

Use your walk for social time.

  • Are you used to walking alone, maybe with your headphones on? Switch it up just for today, ask a buddy to walk with you or use that walking time to call a friend or family member!

Go at a different pace.

  • Instead of your usual leisurely walk, try speed walking or setting a new time goal for yourself. Or if your normal is high-speed, take today to slow down and notice things you normally don’t. However you choose to do it, Happy Walking Day!
