A day at the beach or pool is all about having fun, making memories, and enjoying time outdoors. Hours spent in the sun, swimming, and playing can quickly leave everyone hungry and tired. Packing nutritious meals and snacks can help keep energy levels up while making the day more enjoyable for the whole family. The key is choosing foods that are portable, easy to eat, and safe to keep cool. With a little planning, you can pack a variety of delicious options that both kids and adults will enjoy.
Build a Balanced Beach Lunch
A nutritious lunch should include protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and fruits or vegetables. These nutrients provide lasting energy for swimming, walking on the beach, or playing games. Some simple options include whole-grain turkey or chicken wraps, hummus and veggie wraps, pasta salad made with whole-grain pasta and vegetables, or DIY sandwich boxes with whole-grain bread, lean protein, cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Even a quinoa salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, and grilled chicken or beans makes a refreshing, nutritious choice!
Additionally, packing lunches in reusable containers can help keep foods organized and reduces waste. Freezing a water bottle the night before and placing it in your cooler is another simple trick that helps keep food cold while providing ice-cold water later in the day.
Pack Refreshing and Nutritious Snacks
Healthy snacks help prevent hunger between meals and provide quick energy after swimming or playing. Easy-to-pack foods also make snack time more convenient throughout the day. Fresh fruit like watermelon cubes, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, or apple slices travel well in a cooler. Pair fruit with string cheese or individual containers of plain Greek yogurt for added protein. Crunchy vegetables such as baby carrots, cucumber slices, snap peas, or bell pepper strips are great with hummus or guacamole cups for dipping. I also love whole-grain crackers, popcorn, roasted chickpeas, homemade trail mix, and granola bars. I find that packing snacks in individual portions makes them easy to grab while helping reduce mess.
Keep Food Safe in the Heat!
Proper food storage essential, especially in the summer heat! Pack perishable foods in an insulated cooler with plenty of ice packs or frozen water bottles, and keep the cooler in the shade whenever possible. It helps to keep drinks in a separate cooler to help maintain a safe temperature for food since the food cooler won’t need to be opened as often. Foods like deli meats, yogurt, cheese, eggs, and cooked meats should stay cold until it’s time to eat. A good rule of thumb is that perishable foods should not be left out for more than two hours, or more than one hour when temperatures exceed 90°F.
Stay Hydrated All Day
Spending time in the sun increases fluid needs, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Bring plenty of water for everyone and encourage regular water breaks throughout the day, especially for children. I like to add slices of lemon, lime, cucumber, or berries to reusable water bottles, to make drinking water more enjoyable. Water-rich fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, and strawberries also help support hydration while providing important vitamins and minerals.
Make Every Summer Adventure a Healthy One
A little preparation can go a long way when planning a beach or pool day. Packing balanced meals, nutritious snacks, and plenty of water helps keep everyone energized and ready for fun in the sun. Whether you’re heading to the beach, the neighborhood pool, or a local lake, these simple tips can help make every summer outing both healthy and memorable.
