By now, we all know the importance of wearing sunscreen. It’s one of the best ways to protect our skin from the sun’s powerful rays and lower your chances of getting skin cancer. Even though it’s best to wear sunscreen year-round, as we get into the summer months and may spend more time outside, it’s especially important to always being wearing sunscreen. For those of you who like to get their workout done outside during this time of year, it can be difficult to find a sun screen that feels light but doesn’t come off when you sweat. Skipping the sunscreen during a workout could also leave you dehydrated because the blood vessels near the surface of your skin are more likely to become dilated. Here are some other things to keep in mind while working out in the sun.

Choose protective clothing!

In addition to sunscreen, there are different types of clothing that can protect you from the sun. If you don’t want to splurge on clothes made with SPF, there are some other types of clothing that you should reach for when going outside. Tighter clothes tend to be better, compared to lose fitting. Also opt for darker colored clothing which has shown to be more protective compared to lighter colors. Clothes made with a nylon-polyester blend is better than those made with cotton. Lastly, you want gear that’ll stay relatively dry rather than retain wetness. Also, if you wear sunglasses during your workouts, be sure to choose a pair that has UV/UVB protection.

Sport-proof sunscreen

Many popular sunscreen brands offer kinds specially formulated for being active. They tend to have the word “sport” in them, but you can also opt for a waterproof type. They’re designed to stick to your skin better and not come off with sweat. Choose a lotion that’s at least SPF 45.  About a half hour to 15 minutes before you’re heading outside, apply a shot-glass sized amount to all areas of your exposed skin. Make sure to reapply every two to three hours, and every hour if you’re in water.

Face sunscreen

People with sensitive skin may be familiar with using a different sunscreen on their body than they do their face. Different brands offer lotions specially formulated for sensitive or acne prone skin. As a side note, protecting your face from the sun can help prevent wrinkles and dark spots! Some popular ones are “Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Mineral Defense”. Users say that this is super lightweight, and stands up to the sweatiest of workouts. Another highly rated one is Coola Sport Face with White Tea. Fans of this say they love how it’s not greasy and has a pleasant white tea scent!

No matter what you’re doing, remember to always protect yourself from the sun this summer! Your body will thank you!
