Valentine’s Day When You’re Single

February 10, 2024 //  by Kate Howland

It’s almost February 14th…the day to celebrate love, the beloved or the dreaded, Valentine’s Day. This holiday can be very polarizing – if you are in a relationship, it can be romantic. If you are single, it can lead to a lot of insecurity and possible bitterness. In years past, even when I have been in relationships, whether long-term, new, casual or single, I have always been a bit skeptical of this holiday. Whether you are excited to celebrate it with your boo (or your gals) or you wish the calendar would just skip to the 15th, it is perfectly valid and alright for you to feel that way. If you are falling into the “less than excited” category, here are some ideas to make it a fun day no matter what your situation!

The New V-Day:

  • Make it a YOU day: Take yourself out for your dream date! Maybe it’s to a wine bar with a good book, or to go get a pedicure, or to a hot yoga class, or a movie. At the end of the day, no matter who you are, your most important relationship will always be with yourself so give that relationship some love!
  • Celebrate Friendships: Gather your gals/pals for a day of friend love. Try an escape room, or a themed cook-off, maybe create some valentine’s to give them letting them know how much you care and value your friendship!
  • Spoil your pets: Some of your greatest loves get overlooked on this holiday – your furry buds. Try making your pet a special dinner or picking them up a new toy at the store.
  • Meet new people: Another way to celebrate yourself is to broaden your horizons and your social circle. You could sign up for a hiking meet-up, cooking class, or book club.

It is normal to have negative feelings toward Valentine’s Day, but if you want to redefine the day, try making it special no matter your romantic situation. Happy love (yourself and your closest people) day!
