Walking: The Most Underrated Form Of Exercise

December 27, 2018 //  by Angelina Seeney

Walking is something we do every single day, whether it be walking to work, walking to class, walking to your car, or basically anything else.  The greatest part about all of this, you don’t even think about the walk to class or to your car to be exercise, you just think of it as a task to complete before you get to the next task.  Even just a mile a day can have many health benefits!

KNOWLEDGE IS KEY!!!

Everyone always talks about the magic number of 10,000 steps per day.  This number is not necessarily fully related to anything and is more or less just a goal number that many people strive to achieve to keep them motivated every day. However, for sedentary people who walk between, let’s say 1,000 to 3,000 or 4,000 steps a day, a steady increase from week to week can have tremendous health benefits for your cardiovascular fitness. Some devices such as pedometers are nice and easy starting point for people to start tracking their daily steps and begin to move towards a healthy and steady physical progression.

WHY RUN WHEN YOU CAN WALK!!!

Dr. Matt Tanneberg states, “Walking can be as good as a workout, if not better, than running”.  Walking, while not as demanding with the large muscle groups involved in running, still is a viable option to help people reach their physical fitness goals, as well as their weight loss goals.  Also, walking puts a lot less strain on your muscles, joints, and bones.  With that being said, you can go out for longer walks than you would be able to for longer runs.  For the majority of people, it would be a lot easier to walk for an hour than to go on a run for an hour, and that also just sounds a lot more appealing to people.
