CatFishing- Be Your True Self

children, technology and internet concept - surprised student girl with laptop computer lying on bed at home

August 16, 2025 //  by Jillian Orellano

Catfishing is a term you often hear when referring to social media. Catfishing refers to the act of pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s easy to hide behind a mask online with fake or exaggerated photos, stories and bios. But why do some feel the need to do this? And how can we avoid it? Here’s why being your true self is so important both on and offline.

Why you should be your Authentic Self

Being authentic helps in creating real bonds and connections. When you are your true self, you attract those who appreciate you for you even with flaws and imperfections. Being authentic helps build trust and thus creating strong genuine relationships.

Why do we feel Pressure to Present a Perfect Image

Social media seems to capture highlights of life. Growing up with social media, some feel the pressure to keep up with others by posting idealized versions of themselves. The truth is no one’s life is perfect. Most images online are heavily edited to perfection, causing others to feel they have to do the same. It’s important to be your true self. It helps us relate to one another.

The Risks to Catfishing

Catfishing may seem harmless, but it can cause feelings of guilt, isolation and problems with identity. It may cause harm to your mental state, like anxiety and depression. If your true self is revealed it could ruin relationships and people may feel betrayed. Engaging in catfishing can prevent you from making real connections because you are stopping those from knowing the true you.

The Power of Being Yourself

When you be yourself it allows you to gain real connections that attract you to the right people. Creating real connections makes lifelong friends. The people around you will appreciate you for you, giving you more self confidence and overall a happier person.

In today’s world that likes to value appearance over substance, It’s easy to hide yourself behind a screen and pretend to be someone you’re not. But remember that doesn’t help you form real life connections. Authenticity creates bonds with people who like you for you. Be yourself!
