Easy to Digest Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables on rustic background

May 9, 2022 //  by Kate Howland

Do you struggle with digestive issues? Or do some foods just not agree with your stomach? The phenomenon of gastrointestinal problems occurs in almost everyone. While at-home remedies such as consuming ginger and dandelion root are well known and practiced, you can make a difference in digestive outcomes by changing your diet. The things you eat could have a negative effect on your gastrointestinal tract, but don’t fret just yet. There are foods that are known to be easy on your digestive system and leave your stomach feeling less turbulent.

Vegetables:

Vegetables are rich in fiber which can contribute to an upset stomach, especially when raw. Once they’re cooked, the fiber will be partially broken down and easier to digest. Try steaming, blanching, cooking, or baking veggies first to make them easier on your digestion. Some options for easier to digest veggies include:

    • yellow squash without seeds
    • spinach
    • pumpkin
    • beets
    • green beans
    • carrots

Fruit:

Whole fruits contain high amounts of fiber, and cooking them helps break down the fiber significantly, which makes it easier to digest. Peeling the skin and removing the seeds from fruit and vegetables will help lower the amount of fiber. Some easy to digest fruits include:

    • very ripe banana
    • cantaloupe
    • honeydew melon
    • watermelon
    • avocado
    • applesauce
    • canned or cooked fruits without the skin or seeds

Dealing with a sensitive stomach can be a pain, but you don’t have to go. Swapping out foods in your usual diet for these will probably help settle your stomach on bad days. Written by GUADS intern Sara with contributions from (https://www.healthline.com/)
