As summer comes to an end and fall routines begin to take shape, schedules can quickly become busier. Between work, school, family responsibilities, and everything in between, finding time to be active can easily move to the bottom of the list. Fall, however, can be a great time to reset your routine and find simple ways to make movement a regular part of your day.
Start With Small Changes
Making movement part of your routine does not mean committing to an intense workout every day. Small changes throughout the day can add up and make staying active feel more manageable. Try taking a short walk during your lunch break, parking farther away from your destination, taking the stairs, or stretching between tasks. Short bursts of movement can also help break up long periods of sitting. Even a few minutes of activity can be a meaningful step toward moving more throughout the day.
Take Advantage of the Season
Cooler temperatures and changing leaves make fall an ideal time to get outside. Take a walk through your neighborhood, explore a local trail, go apple picking, rake leaves, or spend time playing an outdoor game with family and friends. Outdoor activities can make movement feel less like exercise and more like an opportunity to enjoy the season. Inviting someone to join you can make it more social, too. A walk with a friend or family member gives you a chance to catch up while getting your body moving.
Find What Fits Your Routine
The most effective movement routine is one that works for your life. Some days may leave plenty of time for a longer walk or workout, while others may only allow for a few minutes of activity. Giving yourself flexibility can make it easier to stay consistent instead of feeling discouraged when your schedule changes. Consider looking at your typical day and identifying where movement naturally fits. A morning stretch, afternoon walk, or few minutes of movement after dinner can become a habit when it is connected to something you already do.
Try the 4-Week Fall Movement Challenge
Looking for a simple way to get started? Try a four-week fall movement challenge. The goal is not to be perfect, it’s to create a habit that feels realistic and sustainable.
Week 1: Move for 10
Take a 10-minute walk or movement break each day.
Week 2: Add an Active Choice
Choose one everyday opportunity to move more, such as taking the stairs, parking farther away, or walking during a break.
Week 3: Get Outside
Spend at least 20 minutes outside being active three times during the week. Walk, rake leaves, hike, play a game, or simply explore your neighborhood.
Week 4: Find Your Favorite
Choose one activity you enjoyed during the challenge and make it part of your regular routine. Invite a friend or family member to join you and make it something to look forward to.
Make Movement Something to Look Forward To
Staying active does not have to feel like another responsibility on your to-do list. Put on your favorite playlist while cleaning, try a new fitness class, walk somewhere you have never explored, or make weekend activities more active.
Fall is a season of change, making it a natural time to refresh your routines and try something new. Start small, choose activities you enjoy, and give yourself room to adapt. A healthier routine does not have to happen all at once, it can begin with one extra walk, one active afternoon, or one small choice to move a little more each day.
