With the winter weather upon us, we may find our noses getting runny and our bodies getting tired. It is undeniably difficult to fight off the winter cold and flu season without any assistance. Rather than turning to fad supplements this season, here are some natural foods that boost immune system function and improve your overall ability to fight off viruses and bacteria.

Spinach and broccoli

These vegetables contain many vitamins and antioxidants including vitamins A and C. Along with flavonoids, these vitamins support the immune system and reduce the risk of contracting the common cold.

Ginger

This root is easy to incorporate into your diet through teas and desserts. Ginger is an anti-inflammatory and is therefore beneficial in reducing cold symptoms.

Oranges, Kiwis, and Red Peppers

These fruits are high in vitamin C. They aid in the reduction of cold symptoms and support the immune system in fighting off viruses and bacteria. Try to incorporate these into your breakfast to start your day off right!

Sunflower Seeds and Almonds

These seeds and nuts contain vitamin E, a vitamin that is beneficial in fighting off free radicals that may attack healthy cells of the immune system. Increase your intake of vitamin E by eating these simple foods in order to support immune ability and lessen your chances of developing a virus.

Aside from eating these beneficial foods, maintaining a steady sleep schedule, exercising regularly, and washing your hands are key factors in avoiding the winter sniffles!
