Healthy Christmas Sugar Cookie Recipe

Snowflake cookies on wooden background

December 15, 2024 //  by Emily Hayburn

Christmas time is full of cookies and candies. While they’re so delicious, they have so much added sugar in them. But who would ever give up cookies this time of year? I know I wouldn’t! Instead, try this healthier alternative for a sugar cookie!

Ingredients:

Cookie:

  • 1 ¾ cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup room temperature unsalted butter
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Icing

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tsp almond milk

Instructions:

  • Mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, cream together butter and maple syrup until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract until combined.
  • Slowly add flour mixture until combined. (Add more flour if it feels to sticky)
  • Wrap dough in plastic wrap for at least 1-2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 350
  • After removing the dough from the fridge, sprinkle flour on your surface and roll out the dough until it’s about ¼-⅓ inches thick
  • Use cookie cutters of your choice!
  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper and line up cookies on top
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are golden brown
  • Once the cookies are cooled, combine powdered sugar, vanilla and almond milk and frost.
  • Decorate with sprinkles or whatever else you would like!

To store these cookies, layer the cookies in an airtight container with parchment paper! For longer storage, freeze unfrosted cookies. Then, when you are ready to serve, let them thaw and then ice!
