Homemade Sushi

August 25, 2020 //  by Antonia Sinibaldi

Sushi is easily one of my favorite foods ever. There’s literally a never-ending list of different rolls to try and even more to satisfy whatever you’re craving. Back in high school, I worked at a sushi restaurant for three years, so I got to watch the sushi chefs make sushi all night long. When I went off to college, I missed having my go-to sushi place, so I decided to start making my own at home. Eventually, I found my go-to spot at school, but making sushi at home is so fun and a good way to save some money (since we all know sushi is not always a budget-friendly meal).

Homemade Sushi

You can look up how to make all different kinds of sushi rolls, but today we’re going to talk about two specific rolls: California and spicy tuna. These are both pretty “basic” rolls, meaning that they don’t have a ton of ingredients, so they’re pretty easy to make on your own.

First, before we talk about how to make sushi rolls, it’s important to have a decent amount of rice made. Sushi rice is a little different from regular rice because it needs to be sticky. All you need to make sure the rice is sticky is some rice vinegar. So let’s say you’re making two cups of rice, just add about two cap-fulls of rice vinegar, and you should be good. Next, make sure you have seaweed paper or soy paper to wrap each of your rolls with. You can choose if you want the seaweed on the inside or outside of your roll–completely up to you.

A couple of extra things to buy at the store (if you want):

  • Sesame seeds
  • Soy sauce
  • Wasabi
  • Ginger

California roll:

Ingredients needed:

  1. Seaweed paper
  2. Sliced avocado
  3. Sliced cucumber
  4. Crab stick

To make:

  1. Put your seaweed paper shiny-side down, and start spreading your rice across the paper (this is easier if you wet your hands first because it’s soooo sticky)
  2. Place the avocado, cucumber, and crab stick in the middle of your seaweed, and start rolling (horizontally) in one direction
    • It should look like a cylinder tube at this point
  3. Cut your roll into as many pieces as you like

Spicy Tuna roll:

Ingredients needs:

  1. For the spicy sauce, you’ll need four things: (1) mayonnaise, (2) spicy chili sauce, (3) sesame oil, and (4) lemon juice
  2. Seaweed paper
  3. Mixed sauce
  4. Avocado
  5. Tuna chunks

To make:

  1. For the sauce, all you do is mix all the ingredients together till it’s as spicy as you like
  2. Take that sauce and mix the tuna chunks in it
  3. Put your seaweed paper shiny-side down, and start spreading your rice acress the paper
  4. Place the avocado and spicy tuna chunks in the middle of the seaweed paper, and start rolling (horizontally) in one direction
  5. Cut your roll into as many pieces as you like

(some people like to make extra sauce to dip their rolls into–it’s me, I’m some people)

I hope you give this a try and you enjoy it! If homemade sushi works for you, there are so many other easy recipes like this online.
